Cambridge United 0 v 0 Southport

STREET-WISE Southport clung on for a well earned point at Cambridge United this afternoon.

The Blue Square Bet Premier match at the Abbey Stadium was a far cry from the thrilling nature of Tuesday night’s win over Kidderminster Harriers but the point won will nonetheless be savoured.

A frustrated Cambridge side failed to break`down a resolute Port defence led by a commanding performance from Robbie Williams.

The home team fstruggled to test Tony McMillan sufficiently with only Brian Saah’s long range effort forcing the goalkeeper into a meaningful save.

Conal Platt, Cambridge’s stand-out player, struck the bar mid-way through the second half to give the home crowd hope but wasted chances from the winger and then Robbie Willmott ensured the Yellows survived to grab a point.

Though chances were at a premium for Southport today, manager Liam Watson would have been left cursing his side’s inability to take advantage of hestitant goalkeeping from Simon Brown with Earl Davis guilty of a miss inside the six yard area late as Port once again wreaked havoc from their set-pieces.

The Yellows will have left Cambridge with few admirers after a stubborn performance but content to have claimed a vital point.
