Southport 0 v 1 Worcester City

With the low winter sun shining into the eyes of Worcester, Southport seized the better of the early play with Paul Barratt serving a dangerous ball in from the left wing through to Robinson, who played the ball onto Tony Gray, whose scoring chance was quickly closed down by Cameron Belford, who diverted the ball away for a corner. Barratt continued to be a threat down the left channel, as he rode the challenge of two defenders before getting the ball through to Gray who turned on goal, firing his shot narrowly over. Barratt again was the instigator of the next chance for Southport as he spotted Mark Duffy free on the edge of the box, but his shot went just wide.

Worcester settled, and started to place a bit of pressure on the Southport defence, however after the half hour mark, Southport again started to apply the pressure as Mark Duffy’s free-kick hit the under-side of the bar, with the ball bouncing back on the wrong side of the line, with Belford scrambling the ball away for a corner. The pressure sustained as Duffy’s free-kick went through to the climbing Kevin Lee, who saw his chance come back off the cross-bar. With Worcester defending deeply, with all eleven players playing deep, Danny Holmes got the ball through the crowded area to Neil Robinson, who tried to guide the ball home, only for Belford to get down well to deny another chance for Southport.

Southport took their time to get back into their stride in the second half, although looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Duffy ventured forward down the right, getting the ball into the danger area, with the ball only being half-cleared through to Chris Holland who shot over from the edge of the area.

Worcester grabbed the lead, as they started to pressure the Southport defence. Rapinder Gill got the ball through to Craig Wilding, with Steve Drench doing well stopping the ball at point-blank range, but moments later Southport were un-done by a free-kick, which went through the crowd of players to Jonathan Munday at the back post, who was free to slot the ball home from close range.
