Ten-man AFC Fylde produced a brilliant comeback on Merseyside to beat Southport 3-2 on Bank Holiday Monday.
A brilliant Danny Mayor goal and a brace from Danny Ormerod meant Fylde won all three points in a dramatic clash at Haig Avenue.
Fylde started the brighter of the two sides and almost went ahead within the opening minute when Jon Ustabasi’s shot deflected just wide for a corner.
Zac Jones then made his first save when Danny Lloyd struck a powerful effort but it was straight at the Fylde stopper.
Fylde were forced into a change midway through the first half when Jon Ustabasi’s afternoon was cut short, making way for Danny Ormerod.
Controversy struck shortly before the half-time whistle when Charlie Jolley was sent off following some grappling in the Fylde area following a Southport corner.
Fylde continued to push for the opener and nearly found it before the break when Lincoln McFayden looked to find Ethan Mitchell at the near post, but his cross was well cut out.
Soon after the break, the hosts made their man advantage from a corner, and after a brilliant save from Zac Jones, the ball was bundled in to break the deadlock.
Craig Mahon introduced Danny Mayor and Chris Merrie just before the hour mark in an attempt to get Fylde back into the contest.
And within a minute of being on the pitch, Mayor did just that with a brilliant run before a curling effort picked out the far corner to equalise for Mahon’s men.
After a short water break, Liam Brockbank replaced Luca Thomas as Fylde continued to push for a winner despite being down to 10.
With just over ten minutes to go, Fylde were handed an opportunity to go ahead with a penalty kick. After a perfect one-two between Mayor and Merrie, the latter was dragged down in the area with referee Ben Wyatt pointing straight to the spot.
After a short wait, young striker Danny Ormerod expertly sent the keeper the wrong way to put Fylde ahead with little time remaining.
Jordan Slew forced Zac Jones into a stunning save with a shot on the turn before Max Taylor produced a heroic tackle on the far side.Eight minutes were added on as ten-man Fylde looked to hold on to all three points.
With three of the eight played, Southport looked like they’d stolen a point as Ben Collins produced an unbelievable strike which found the top corner.
Fylde looked like they’d have to settle for a point, but Danny Ormerod pounced on a long ball and snatched the ball away from the Southport keeper to claim a well-earned three points on the road.
A quite stunning team effort from Mahon’s side, which makes it three wins on the bounce for AFC Fylde.
