As has been the case in most games so far this season we started brightly and had a couple of good chances in the first half with both Nathan Sandison and Aaron Pickles going close to giving us the lead.
Unfortunately the chances weren’t taken and with just one shot on target, a weak effort from Sonny Hilton late on in the first half. in the whole game, it was a difficult afternoon for the travelling Sandgrounders.
It was a stop start game from early on with a medical emergency in the first half delaying the game for 20 minutes, and we all hope the person concerned is well and the game never got flowing at any point.
Worksop came out of the blocks quickly in the second half and two goals inside 4 minutes in the 47th and 51st minutes put the game to bed and there was no way back with no meaningful attacks of note and a lot of wayward passing making life difficult.
Manager Neil Danns made four changes to the starting eleven with Ne-Jai Tucker, Nathan Sandison, Aaron Pickles and Callum Edwards all getting a first start.
Two quick fire goals from Lewis Whitham and Aaron Martin earned the Tigers our first win of the season as we ran out 2-0 winners against Southport at the Windsor Foodservice Stadium.
Southport started the better of the two teams as a mix up at the back led to Ne-Jai Tucker poking an effort wide from just inside the box. Liam Hughes then had a speculative volley from 35-yards out which went over the bar. The Sandgrounders continued to have more chances as Mo Touray fired over from a curling effort from the edge of the box.
Aaron Pickles had an excellent opportunity to score the visitors from a corner which has headed up into the air by Waterfall but the Southport centre-back couldn’t guide his shot on target.
Play was then suspended due to a medical emergency in the crowd, restarting 15 minutes later after a lengthy delay. Dylan Cogill had a snapshot volley from the edge of the box which went wide of the goal to close out a half where the visitors dominated.
The Tigers were a new team in the second half and they took the lead two minutes as Joe Leesley’s long ball found Hughes, who flicked on to substitute Vaughan Redford, who flicked on to Lewis Whitham before turning and firing into the top corner for his first goal for the club.
It didn’t take long for the hosts to get a second as Leesley’s corner on the 51st minute found Aaron Martin who had made a run across goal to head in.
Worksop continued to have chances after a bit of head tennis ended in Aleks Starcenko having a shot which went wide. Mason O’Malley latched onto to a Southport clearance and nearly found the net with a half-volley on his weak foot which just over the bar.
Whitham almost found the goal once again with a shot on half turn that went just wide of the goal. Hughes almost got in on the act as he was played in on goal, but his shot was saved by the keeper and his rebound attempt went agonisingly wide of the post.
