Match Report – Southport Visiter – 29/09/1888

On Saturday last the Central encountered St Helens on the Sports Ground, Sussex Road, before about 500 spectators. It was scarcely to be expected that the visiters, although a fairish lot of their class, would be able to cope with such a strong combination as the newly formed club, and those who had assembled with the expectation of seeing a close match went away sadly disappointed. As soon as operations commenced the home team went over the dash, and were soon peppering away at the visiters’ goal. This state of affairs was kept up with a very few intermissions throughout the whole game, and when the whistle sounded the representatives of Central had nine goals to their credit, whilst the visiters, through the bungling of the home goalkeeper, managed to secure a couple of goals. This afternoon the Central meet Chorley on the Sports Ground with the following team: Joy, Shaw, Walsh, Horton, Ackroyd, Lea-Jones, T.Morris, Sourbutts, Taylor, Graham and Duncan.

The Southport Swifts and the St Helens Reserve met on the ground of the latter on Saturday last, and, as was the case with the first team, they scored nine goals, but in this instance the home team were unable to obtain any tangible point. During the first portion of the match the Swifts obtained four goals, and had it not been for the selfishness of two members of the team, this score would have been considerably increased. In the second half, however, less individual play was shown, and as a consequence five more goals were registered, the Swifts thus leading the field winners by the substantial majority of nine goals to nil. This afternoon the swifts meet Lostock Hall at Lostock. Team: Guest, Baxter, Walmsley, Blundell, Evans, Pasquill, Forshaw, Hibbs, Rimmer, Blackledge and Brighouse.

Match Report – Southport Visiter – 25/09/1888

St Helens Reserve v Southport Swifts – Played last Saturday at St. Helens resulting in favour of the Swifts by nine goals to nil. Rimmer winning the toss chose to play up the hill. From the kick off it was apparent that the St Helens men were simply not in it. Southport began operations by bombarding the Saints’ goal and at the call of time they were still “all there”. The monotony of the the siege being broken only by occasional visits of the St Helens team to goal, which, however, were but of a few moments duration. In the first half the Swifts claimed four goals, and not for the selfishness of two of their number they might have improved on that more considerably. In the second-half, however, more combination was shown and, five other shots beat the St Helens custodian, who played a good game. Southport Swifts team: Guest, goal; Walmsley and Pasquill, backs; F.Rimmer, Blundell and Evans, halfbacks; Foreshaw, Blackledge, W.Rimmer, Hibbs and Brighouse, forwards. St Helens names not given.
