Match Report – Southport Visiter – 18/09/1888

Southport Swifts v Walton Breck – This match was played at Lister-drive on Saturday, the Southport team, which is really the second string of the Southport Central, and is distinguished by the title of Swifts, being a good one, but never having played together previously, they were at a decided disadvantage. Walton won the toss, and kicked off, but the visiters soon worked the ball back again. Play raged in midfield, but several pieces of good play by Houldsworth for the home team, and Rimmer for Southport, were conspicuous. Forshaw got in a couple of hot shots, but the Walton goalkeeper managed to stave danger off. A smart run across, and some good combined play by the home forwards brought the ball to the visiters’ end, but no score accrued. The visiters gradually worked their way back, and from a stiff scrimmage in front of goal Tom Hibbs kicked the first goal. From the kick off a rush was made to the Southport goal, and Guest had his hands full to save the citadel. Play for the first time was now a good deal in the visiters’ quarters, and the ball was kicked behind several times. The attack was not long sustained, Hibbs soon having another shot at goal, but kicking too high. Lee now had all his work cut out in defending his goal, but he kept his charge intact until half time, when the score was one to nil in favour of the visiters. During the remainder of the game the Swifts had most of the play, and eventually won by three goals to nil. Southport Swifts :- A.Guest, goal; R.Walmsley and R.Pasquill, fullbacks; F.Rimmer, C.Blundell, & Evans, halfbacks; Brighouse, Blackledge, T.Hibbs, ForShaw and S.W.Rimmer, forwards. Walton Breck: Lee, goal; Jones and Houldsworth, full backs; James, Hull and Coglan, halfbacks; Allan, Cadwallader, Brampton, Reid and Alton, forwards.
