Match Report – Southport Visiter – 29/09/1888

On Saturday last the Central encountered St Helens on the Sports Ground, Sussex Road, before about 500 spectators. It was scarcely to be expected that the visiters, although a fairish lot of their class, would be able to cope with such a strong combination as the newly formed club, and those who had assembled with the expectation of seeing a close match went away sadly disappointed. As soon as operations commenced the home team went over the dash, and were soon peppering away at the visiters’ goal. This state of affairs was kept up with a very few intermissions throughout the whole game, and when the whistle sounded the representatives of Central had nine goals to their credit, whilst the visiters, through the bungling of the home goalkeeper, managed to secure a couple of goals. This afternoon the Central meet Chorley on the Sports Ground with the following team: Joy, Shaw, Walsh, Horton, Ackroyd, Lea-Jones, T.Morris, Sourbutts, Taylor, Graham and Duncan.

The Southport Swifts and the St Helens Reserve met on the ground of the latter on Saturday last, and, as was the case with the first team, they scored nine goals, but in this instance the home team were unable to obtain any tangible point. During the first portion of the match the Swifts obtained four goals, and had it not been for the selfishness of two members of the team, this score would have been considerably increased. In the second half, however, less individual play was shown, and as a consequence five more goals were registered, the Swifts thus leading the field winners by the substantial majority of nine goals to nil. This afternoon the swifts meet Lostock Hall at Lostock. Team: Guest, Baxter, Walmsley, Blundell, Evans, Pasquill, Forshaw, Hibbs, Rimmer, Blackledge and Brighouse.

Match Report – Southport Visiter – 25/09/1888

Southport Central v St Helens – The Central not having an engagement down on their card for Saturday last accepted as a last resort to try conclusions with St Helens, a club that has not up to the present time made any great reputation for itself. About 500 spectators assembled on the Sports Ground to witness the encounter, which turned out, as was expected, to be a most one-sided one. It is unnecessary to describe the match, as except on very few occasions the home team were constantly peppering away at the visiters’ goal, and although the visiting custodian acquitted himself in a creditable manner, the onslaught was so fierce that before the conclusion of the match nine shots had been sent past him. Through the mulling of Tyldesley, who by no means retrieved his honours for his display of the previous Saturday, the visitors managed to score a couple of goals, and when the whistle sounded an uninteresting match had terminated in a victory for the Central by nine goals to two. The following were the teams:- Central: Tyldesley, Joy, Farrar, Ackroyd, Horton, Duncan, Graham, Taylor, Lea-Jones and Sourbutts. St Helens: Pinnington, Duxbury, Green, Powell, Strettle, Molyneux, Miller, Westhead, Griffiths, Sexton and Pinnington.
