“In their return Lancashire Combination match with Southport Central, the Anfielders just scrambled home by the odd goal of the match. There was no score in the first half, but after the change of ends Fitzpatrick gained the winning point. That the teams were evenly matches will be judged by glancing at the final score, and the Central were rather unfortunate in being beaten. The defence of the Anfielders was sound, and this the visitors quickly estimated at its proper worth. In the intermediate line Hignett was prominent, but the forwards as usual were very moderate, and Hitchinson on the extreme left wing was the best of an ordinary quintette.”
