SOUTHPORT WELL BEATEN

EARLY LEAD SOON LOST

REPLAYED CUP-TIE

New Brighton Defend Stubbornly(By “MARINER”)

Southport were ousted from the F.A. Cup competition at Everton, this afternoon, when New Brighton beat them by the odd goal in three in the second replayed tie.

Southport scored first through Worswick, but before the interval New Brighton had taken the lead through Butler and Kenyon.

Teams:Southport: Morrison; Clements, Grainger; Pickering, Seagrave, Scott; Boland, Appleby, Worswick, Proudfoot, Gore.

New Brighton: Carr (A.); Carr (L.), Amery; Butler, Ratcliffe, Smedley; Brown, Allen, Davis, Miller, Kenyon.

Referee: Mr. G. Hewitt, St. Helens.

A good following was brought by Southport who were soon attacking strongly, and Appleby shot wide after left wing movements.

When their opponents pressed, Pickering and Scott were alert in checking them, and thrills came when Gore and Proudfoot failed narrowly to find the net after further raids.

A New Brighton breakaway saw Morrison turn aside Brown’s shot for a corner, and soon Southport were once more pressing with Worswick prominent in several movements.

After Gore had dribbled past several defenders he got the ball to Appleby and the latter served Boland, whose header was fisted away by Carr.

Better football than in the previous matches was being played by both sides with Southport putting plenty of thrust into their efforts, and thrill-creating movements were frequent.

For a foul on Allen, New Brighton were awarded a free kick which Amery placed into Morrison’s hands, and a minute later put another free kick a shade wide.

Morrison was called upon to make a fine save from Davis when the latter tried from close range after a determined raid, and Smedley tried to send his side away, but was checked by Grainger.

PICKERING INJURED

Southport’s left wing broke through cleverly, but met strong resistance and when Worswick searched for an opening he found the opposing goal too closely packed. With a strong effort, Clements helped to keep Southport on the attack, and a free kick for a foul on Appleby was placed by Pickering near the goalmouth where Scott ultimately shot behind after Ratcliffe had twice headed away.

At this stage about 3,000 people were present. Play was held up for an injury to Pickering, who hurt his left ankle when tackled as he was about to pass to Clements and had to be taken off the field. A strong New Brighton raid strongly followed in which Morrison saved finely from the feet of Davis after running out several yards.

SOUTHPORT SCORE FIRST

The goalkeeper’s brilliance was again evident when he cleared a hard drive from Miller and for a spell Southport attacked, Worswick being checked after a dashing break through. Just as Brown was going to shoot after a fast movement, Seagrave dashed in and took the ball off his toes. Improved work was being done by the New Brighton team, who gave Morrison several anxious moments, but Scott helped to move play to the other end.

Seagrave also put in some strong kicks, but it was nearly half an hour before Southport forced their first corner, which was well placed to advantage. They maintained their pressure, however, and took the lead after 35 minutes when awarded a free kick for hands just outside the penalty area. Scott placed it nicely to WORSWICK, who headed it in without a trace of hesitation.

Within three minutes New Brighton had equalised when Morrison misjudged an effort from KENYON out on the left wing and the ball dropped into the corner of the net.

The thrills continued, Southport pressing spiritedly down the centre and their opponents playing with equal thrust. Grainger neatly cleared a well-placed kick from Amery, but after a melee near goal following a corner BUTLER headed in after 42 minutes.

Towards the interval Southport replied keenly, Worswick trying to dribble through without success.

HALF-TIME—NEW BRIGHTON 2, SOUTHPORT 1.

When New Brighton attacked immediately on the restart they were awarded a free-kick, but Davies headed over when well placed, and Worswick gave their goal goal a similar narrow escape a moment later. Southport seemed to be unable to get their forward line moving, and they were soon forced on the defence when Clement and Grainger both showed up well against forceful raids. Morrison dived out to fist away a shot by Kenyon, but the pressure was maintained till a left-wing movement gave Worswick an opening from which he shot wide, admittedly from a difficult position. The next attempt was by Appleby, who shot along the ground, but Carr saved coolly.

By their keen attacks New Brighton were wearing down Southport for whom Clement made several fine clearances, and Pickering’s lameness handicapped them in pressing home openings on the right wing. The standard of play had deteriorated from the first half, however, kick-and-rush methods being adopted by both sides. When Gore placed the ball far across to the right wing, Boland was just too late to gain possession, but the defence seemed stout enough to withstand most Southport movements at this period.

DEFENSIVE LAPSES

It was not solely on defence that New Brighton were concentrating, for their forward line was persistently threatening, and Morrison had to make frequent saves. Defensive lapses allowed New Brighton to force a corner from which Morrison saved almost on the goal line from Miller, and in turn Southport raided strongly, Worswick driving over from a dozen yards out. Worswick was quick to recover and when he went through again slipped in a shot which Carr cleared only with difficulty.

A centre from Boland went nicely to Worswick, who headed immediately for goal, his effort going a yard wide, and Scott tried vainly to break through soon afterwards. Morrison caused anxiety when he ran out to clear from Miller, who kicked past him, but Seagrave was there to clear with a fine kick.

As the game neared the end, New Brighton concentrated on defence, which Southport were not clever enough to penetrate.

RESULT—NEW BRIGHTON 2, SOUTHPORT 1.

Gate receipts: £236; attendance: 4,000.

Southport were dismissed from the competition by a side more adaptable to the conditions. They could not match the forceful method of their opponents, especially in the second half, when Pickering was limping badly. Their forwards failed to get sufficient support, though Scott strove valiantly to initiate movements. Accurate passing also was lacking. If Worswick, who displayed alertness, had been better aided by his colleagues, there might have been a different result. Proudfoot impressed by his scheming. Against the lively New Brighton attack, in which Davies and Kenyon were prominent, Seagrave was forced on to the third back game. Both Clement and Grainger were sound, and Morrison enhanced his reputation by his goalkeeping.
