Connor wins it for Sandgrounders
Southport ended a run of four home games without a win as a last-gasp Joe Connor strike finally saw off Welling in a 1-0 Vanarama Conference victory at the Merseyrail Community Stadium.
A rather uneventful first period burst into life for the wrong reason after 41 minutes when Wings goalkeeper Jamie Turner was sent off for stamping on Richard Brodie, with the visitors then replacing Malachi Hudson with substitute shot-stopper Jonathan Henly.
Southport predictably started the second half in a more positive mood, but Brodie, David Fitzpatrick and Luke Foster failed to convert chances.
Substitute John Marsden hit the post from 25 yards out but Connor finally broke the deadlock when sweeping a Brodie cross into the bottom left corner in the 94th minute and there was still time for Welling to be reduced to nine men when Jamie Day saw red.
