THE CHAMPIONS AT SOUTHPORT.

Athletic News – Monday 20 May 1889

The seasiders always go in for something sensational in the way of advertising, so it is not su prising that the Southport Central informed the public that “The Champions are coming” in their match with the Preston North End. The sandgrounders mustered in full force, and Mr. Sudell and his merry men were preceded on the way to the ground by Herr de Mersey’s band, and Dr. Pilkington kicked off to the accompaniment of the “Deepdale March.” The Champions showed more how the game should be played in the field than how to score, and their splendid passing was much admired. The home team stuck to their guns pluckily, and the forwards made most of their opportunities, and they have every reason to be satisfied with a defeat of four goals to two.
