Headers Give Snappy Reds The Lead

A 13TH-minute picture goal, JOHN EVANS, put Barnsley in front against Southport this afternoon, but five minutes later Southport were level.

Then, with the action fast and furious, BARRIE THOMAS put Barnsley in front again after 21 minutes.

Southport kicked off before Barnsley’s biggest gate for 12 months, and their shoot-on-sight policy was quickly in evidence when Alty and Redrobe both sent 25-yarders crashing a couple of feet wide.

But Barnsley were in no mood to play second fiddle and Reeves brought off a handsome save when Barton sent in a fierce volley from Thomas’s header.

Barnsley went ahead after Winstanley had pulled down Barton from behind, bringing the trainer on the field for a few minutes.

Earnshaw swung the kick into the middle, and EVANS, running in, stooped low to guide the ball into the bottom corner.

For a spell Barnsley provided some glorious attacking moves, but when the next goal came it was at the other end.

Big Jim Fryatt whipped in a 25-yarder which possibly curled in to beat Ironside’s despairing dive.

On knee

Barnsley shot into the lead again three minutes later with another brilliantly-taken goal.

Bob Earnshaw made it, whipping across a short, sharp centre to THOMAS, who went down on one knee to nod it home.

Evans, with a quickly taken effort on the turn, blasted wide from eight yards when Hewitt’s cross from the left had Reeves and Cairns in a tangle.

Hewitt went over the goal-line for a spot of treatment after a collision with Russell in the Barnsley goalmouth.

Then Brookes was spoken to by the referee for an over-enthusiastic tackle.

After 33 minutes Fryatt threatened danger again but Winstanley, covering magnificently, conceded a corner from which Alty fired wide.

Lively

Then came three free-kicks to Barnsley in as many minutes as the visitors’ defence struggled to contain the lively home attack.

Half-time—Barnsley 2, Southport 1.

Straight for the kick-off, Earnshaw dashed through on the right, but as Reeves came out the winger lifted the ball over the top of the goal.

Reeves cut out a ground pass from Hamstead with Thomas rushing in and then beautifully glided home by the Reds won two corners on the right.

When Southport broke out, Fryatt tried a repeat of his first-half effort, but was well off target. In the 53rd minute Evans shot wide from an acute angle after Reeves had only partially saved a Thomas drive, while the referee allowed the goal presumably for offside.

Danger

There was a spot of excitement at the Barnsley end, with the ball bobbing around dangerously, and when Parker tried to clear he only succeeded in turning it against the legs of Brookes standing almost on the goal-line. The full-back cleared quite coolly.

In the next minute, the referee turned down Barnsley appeals for a penalty when the linesman’s flag went up and Thomas was downed by Peat.

Then Bettany, with Reeves beaten, looked on in dismay as his shot rattled the woodwork.

Southport suddenly returned to the attack with a vengeance.

After a free-kick for a foul by Hewitt McKinley swung in a high and wide centre which Ironside took at his best to clear over a good header by Redrobe.

Thomas, though, hit in and Hamstead got his head to an Earnshaw centre. But the ball glanced off the foot of the upright.

Four minutes from time Barnsley made certain of a place in the second round when THOMAS banged home their third goal after a shot from Evans had been cleared off the line.

Result—BARNSLEY 3, SOUTHPORT 1.

In the 17th minute Southport were level. Smith slipped a pass to Fryatt, who hammered home a shot from 25 yards.

Three minutes later Thomas headed Barnsley into the lead from an Earnshaw centre.

SPLENDID FOOTBALL

Reeves punched away a high Barton shot. Between three magnificent goals in the first 20 minutes there had been some splendid football.

There was plenty of skill on view, and the pace was well above Fourth Division standards. After Alty had driven the ball just wide, Fryatt tried an overhead shot, but the ball flew into the crowd behind the goal.

Half-time: — Barnsley 2, Southport 1.

Barnsley pressed from the restart and Earnshaw glided the ball just off the target. Alty drove over the goal as the visitors hit back. Southport broke quickly from a defensive stint for SRedrobe to drive the ball along the ground and wide.

Reeves cleverly cut out a Hamstead cross, then a centre from Redrobe was too fast as Smith ran in. Evans hit the ball in the Southport net but was ruled offside.

Thomas scored for Barnsley in the 86th minute.

Final. — BARNSLEY 3, SOUTHPORT 1.
