Spoils shared in windy affair

SOUTHPORT 2 OXFORD CITY 2

FOUR goals in 20 minutes saw the points shared at The Big Help Stadium.

A blustery first half lacked many efforts on goal as the wind seemed to carry every lofted ball over and out of play for a series of goal kicks and throw-ins.

The best chance of the half fell to the dangerous Sonny Hilton after being played through on the 43rd minute but the attacking midfielder struggled to bring the ball under control and the Oxford back line recovered.

Finally the breakthrough came in the 55th minute as a ball fired across the Southport box was poked home by centre-half Jalen Jones who stole in at the back post.

From there the game opened up five minutes later and the scoreline was level, Danny Lloyd reacting fastest after goalkeeper Laurie Walker had palmed a cross into the penalty area.

The Sandgrounders took the lead in the 70th minute as Will Russ poked home at the near post after some great play down the line by Hilton and Southport substitute Luke Burgess.

The visitors shot down the comeback hopes six minutes later when substitute Jayden Carbon scrambled the ball in after a long ball into the box bounced around in the goalmouth.

The draw leaves Southport with just one win in their last eight games, a run stretching back to the start of March.
