As a schoolboy he played for Cumbria Under–15s and had North of England Schoolboy trials. After playing junior football in his native Egremont, he signed professional forms for Workington, a club he first assisted as a 16-year-old amateur. He had 25 (+11) games in the Reds’ League side in three seasons, scoring once. He joined Southport on a two-month trial but his only outing was as substitute for the last 22 minutes of Southport’s opening game of 1974–75. Thereafter he played in the Cheshire League before returning to Cumbria and local football. ‘Chic’, as he is known, also played Rugby League at Under–17 level. He coached Vaux Wearside Leaguers Cleator Moor Celtic from 1986 to 1988 and Windscale United from 1990 to 1992. A former motor mechanic, he has worked at Sellafield for over 15 years. His father was an England Schoolboy trialist goalkeeper.
