A midfield player at school in Salford, he was spotted by a Watford scout and went straight there. He signed professionally after a successful trial and helped them win promotion from Division Four in 1959–60, scoring an equalising goal at Haig Avenue on his wedding day (12 March 1960) in the process. He had impressed Sheffield United in an F.A. Cup-tie and he joined them for six seasons, all but the first in Division One. An ankle injury led to his departure and, having failed to click at Carlisle, he was converted to full-back by Jimmy Meadows at Stockport. Though it was as a full-back that Meadows brought him to Southport, he resumed on the left wing where he gave some sparkling performances, most notably a hat-trick at Exeter City on 16 October. His final appearance was his 300th in the Football League. After leaving Haig Avenue, he had a number of seasons in non-League football, before becoming a postman in Stockport for four years. For the past 10 years, he has been working as a taxi driver.
