Discovered by Preston while serving in the Navy during the Second World War, Albert Dainty made just one League appearance for North End before transferring to Stockport County, where he scored twice on his début. Stockily built, he added craft and shooting ability to Southport’s forward line after being signed, along with Ralph Maddison, from Stockport County for £1,200.Although slightly heavyset and not a fast mover, he delivered strong performances at inside-forward. His specialty was the crossfield pass from inside-right to outside-left, complemented by powerful shooting. Dainty could have been among the best inside-forwards in the Third Division but was plagued by injuries, which prematurely ended his League career. He later won a Lancashire Junior Cup winners’ medal with Lancaster City and became team manager and player-coach at Morecambe. He passed away at age 55 after a series of heart attacks.
