Harry Harrison

An ideal club man, this thin, lanky defender was extremely popular with the Southport supporters who christened him ‘Spider’ Harrison. He had spent two seasons at Chesterfield without making the League team but performed impressively for Southport Reserves in the Jubilee Fund game with Accrington Stanley in August 1939. He was sensationally preferred to Dave Hill for the opening League match at Darlington on 26 August and retained his place for the two subsequent games up to the outbreak of war. He gave the club fine service, occupying full-back and half-back positions. He played two war-time seasons before joining the Army and received a record club benefit of £550 in April 1950 when such luminaries as Frank Swift, Bill Shankly, and Tom Finney turned out in an International XI. Later, he acted as second-team trainer on match days and carried out general repair work on the ground before giving up his post to return to his trade as a joiner at the end of 1953–54. He later emigrated to South Australia, where he still remains.
