As a youngster with Liverpool, he had displaced Billy Liddell from the outside-right berth in their first team. He was Southport’s first professional close-season signing in 1946–47, being signed for a small fee after a number of war-time outings for Liverpool when he played against Southport. In 1945–46 he was a member of Liverpool’s Central League side and also assisted Blackburn Rovers on a number of occasions. This powerfully built winger who packed a hefty shot scored only one League goal—a last-minute equaliser in a 3–3 draw with Hartlepools. He failed to hit his best form at Haig Avenue and joined South Liverpool after being transfer listed at the end of the season. A bad ankle injury at Flint Town in 1950 put an end to his career. During the war, he was in a reserved occupation with A.M.T. (Plessey) but working Saturdays interfered with his career. He worked at Plesseys until retiring at 62 and still lives in Tuebrook.
