Bob Hacking

A former Blackburn Technical School player and a Lancashire County amateur, he started his League career with his hometown club. After service in the RAF, he was with Luton, whom, along with Arsenal, he had assisted during the war. He had only one League appearance with the Hatters and then moved on to Brighton twelve months later. After a season at the Goldstone Ground, he joined Southport as an inside-forward, but it was as a wing-half of indomitable spirit and grand loyalty over six seasons that he made himself a firm favourite with the crowd. He was one of the cleverest ball-players in the Northern Section. Whilst at Haig Avenue, his cartoons and caricatures became a regular weekly feature in the Southport Journal. When briefly restored to inside-right in October 1953, he responded with three goals in two games. He went into market gardening after retiring from football and then became a produce salesman on the markets. Now retired, Bob remains a keen golfer and still lives in the district.
