He was spotted by Blackpool playing in a Co-op Medals competition; he made his début for Blackpool ‘B’ in November 1969 but got no further than the Central League team at Bloomfield Road. He showed great promise when blooded by Southport after Alan Taylor was injured in training. In the Championship season he shared the goalkeeping duties with Alan Taylor — each making 23 appearances — but conceded one or two soft goals, none more so than the 45-yard effort by Reading’s débutant full-back Andy Alleyne. This incident seemed to affect his confidence, as did the disgraceful buffeting he received at the hands of Port Vale in the F.A. Cup. On leaving Southport he played for teams in Eire and after marrying an Irish girl settled in Cork. He drove for the state bus company and is now an inspector on the buses in Cork.
