He served his time as a bricklayer and roofer until being called up towards the end of World War I. He played at full-back in Army football but developed as an outside-left in the West Lancashire League; but it was from Dick, Kerr’s in the Lancashire Combination that Preston signed him towards the end of 1920–21. He impressed on his only appearance in North End colours, the last game of the season on 7 May 1921. With Southport he played in 9 of the first 14 games in 1922–23. After two years out of the game, he signed for Dick, Kerr’s and later joined Colne; finally, he was re-instated as an amateur in the Preston and District League. He was a property repairer who later worked at the Royal Ordnance Factory at Euxton for a number of years until his early retirement around 1963. He died of bronchitis ten years later.
