Peter Gowans

An experienced inside-forward, he made more than 100 League appearances with each of his first three clubs in the lower divisions after failing to make the grade in his native Scotland. He was no slouch in front of goal either, notching 91 goals. At Crewe, he took over on the left wing after the departure of Ron Smith (q.v.). He still played on the wing when Aldershot signed him for £3,000. A dispute with Alan Ball enabled him to add only a further 3 +1 appearances to his 387 +10 at Haig Avenue, and the club’s financial constraints enforced his release at the end of his trial period.He continues to live in Crewe and works on the railways. After he finished playing, he had a spell out of football but now enjoys training a Sunday pub team, “The Jumping Frog.”
