This stocky half-back, a product of Bolton Boys Federation football, made his League début in the last game of the 1949—50 season as an amateur right-half, with Trevor Hitchen moving to centre-forward to accommodate him. Ronnie managed just one further League appearance on turning professional. He joined Bangor City on a month’s trial and was one of eight former Southport players to represent them in the F.A. Cup-ties in November 1951. He was in the Reserves the following season when Bangor were again drawn to play Southport and by 1953—54 was the only ex-Southport player with the Welsh club. He joined Chorley, turning out at outside-right on a number of occasions. He worked for the National Coal Board throughout his footballing days and beyond and still occasionally visits Haig Avenue from his home in Little Hulton.
