Paul 'Ace' Farrell

When he appeared as substitute against Torquay United, Paul ‘Ace’ Farrell became — by one day — the youngest player ever to represent Southport in the Football League, being just 17 years and 48 days old. Nicknamed ‘Ace’ by his team-mates owing to his frequent use of the word, he managed one further substitute appearance only; his entire League career comprised just 24 minutes! Brought up in the Kensington district of Liverpool, he moved to Croxteth when nine. He attended Croxteth Secondary Modern School and played inside-right for Liverpool Schoolboys under 15s in 1973—74. For Liverpool Boys Cricket XI he once took 7 for 23 at Childwall. He played for Liverpool ‘A’ and ‘B’ sides while still at school but after a year he was released at 16; now living in Cantril Farm he was recommended to Jimmy Melia at Haig Avenue and became the club’s first apprentice professional for three years. After playing regularly for twelve months in the Lancashire League team his contract was cancelled by Ray Henderson, leaving him very disillusioned. After a season with Sunday League side Tiffanys (on the Wirral) he packed in football when he became a Jehovah’s Witness; after working as a labourer, barman, and male model he now runs his own security fencing company from a base in Bootle.
