Don Earlam

He first came to Southport’s attention when he played a friendly for an RAF team against Southport Reserves on 31 March 1954, having previously had three Central League games for Stoke City. He was signed as an amateur but did not have long to wait for his first team chance. In the fourth game of the season Trevor Hitchen was switched to inside-right and Don was surprisingly preferred to the more experienced Harry Edwards. He made 24 Combination appearances in 1954—55 but, although retained for 1955—56, he was allowed to leave in early September. Though a bad knee injury when 29 nearly ended his career, he continued to play in local football round Altrincham until he was almost 40. He worked as a builder until his untimely death at 56.
