Tommy Dunne

A nephew of Jimmy Dunne, the Sheffield United, Arsenal and Irish International, this well-built wing-half never fulfilled his early promise after representing the League of Ireland against the Irish League while with Shamrock Rovers. During 41/2 seasons with Leicester City he was unable to gain a regular place in their League team — his best season was 1953—54 when he made 19 appearances in helping City to win the Second Division championship. He was in and out of the Southport side and was placed on the transfer list after being dropped for playing too much attacking football, making way for Tommy Kinloch in March 1958. Following his retirement at the end of that season he settled in the town and turned out for an Old Southport XI in charity matches. He became the licensee of the Hoghton Arms and later the Mason’s Arms in Southport for a number of years until 1983. His health declined severely in his late fifties and he died of cancer of the throat in Fazackerley Hospital after a long illness.
