The only child of a referee father, Jack Diamond grew up in Hull. Though naturally right-footed, he was equally adept with either foot. Known for his exceptional heading ability, Diamond made a strong impression during his single Football League appearance for Hull City against Barrow, leading J.J. Commins to sign him for Shelbourne and later bring him to Southport. In the 1933–34 season, Diamond scored 20 goals, including a Christmas Day hat-trick against Rochdale in just 15 minutes. However, inconsistent team support often hampered his performances. He transferred to Barnsley for £1,500 after scoring 8 goals in 13 games during the 1934–35 season, though he made only four appearances for the Oakwell side. Nicknamed “Legs” Diamond after the American gangster, he rediscovered his scoring touch at Oldham Athletic, netting goals in 50 League games. After retiring, Diamond worked as a moulder in a foundry in Oldham.
