A speedy and robust defender, Jock Devine was quick and reliable in tackles. He made 14 appearances for Plymouth Argyle over two seasons, primarily as a left-back. Devine was known for his powerful left-footed kicks and scored two penalties against Queens Park Rangers while at Plymouth. His only other League goal came for Southport against Rochdale.Appointed Southport’s club captain at Haig Avenue, Devine married a Wirral girl at Holy Family Church during his time with the club. After retiring from League football, he returned to Kilsyth, where he worked as a labourer and at a local gun range. He died in Glasgow Infirmary after suffering a stroke during a lunchtime football match at work.
