Dave Craig

He served in the RAF with Stan Mortensen (q.v.) and guested with Chelsea during the war. As an amateur he appeared for Marine when they lost to Barnet in the semi-final of the F.A. Amateur Cup in 1946. Turning professional with Blackpool he made about 30 Central League appearances in 1946-47 but sustained an injury early the following campaign which kept him out for the greater part of the season. One of the biggest wingers Southport had for some years, he was signed on a two months’ trial and scored after just two minutes on his début. He scored again in his second game but his form overall did not come up to expectations, with the result that he was allowed to leave. After a number of seasons in non-League football he emigrated to Canada. Shortly after undergoing heart surgery he telephoned the authors at the 1981 Centenary Reunion all the way from Alberta to wish his former colleagues well; his gesture was greatly appreciated.
