We return to the NPL championship season of 1992/93 today as the Sandgrounders, fresh from having beaten title challengers Frickley Athletic, turn their attention to the Lancashire Challenge Trophy (Lancashire Junior Cup) and a second round clash with North West Counties side Clitheroe.
Beaten finalists last term, Southport are facing Clitheroe for the third time in four seasons in this competition. New signing Stuart Mellish was ineligible and Phil Quinlan and Ian Baines were both out through injury, but the Sandgrounders were able to welcome Mark Brennan back from a spell on the sidelines.
