On a day in history that we have only played a handful of times, we look back at the visit of Peterborough at the end of 1972 and we will take a look at the diary of a man who passed away on this day in 1967.
1972
All the signs pointed to a comfortable home win for Southport against Peterborough at Haig Avenue but the tale of injury woe this week in 1972 altered the outlook for manager Jimmy Meadows.
With Chris Dunleavy, Norman Lloyd and Frank Lee all picking up nasty injuries in the draw at Hereford on Boxing Day, Meadows had to frantically reorganising his side.
Southport were out to extend their unbeaten home run for their 12th win and knew that any slip up would be punished by the club nipping at their heels.
Whilst Peterborough were struggling in the league and had one of the worst defensive records, a note of caution was taken by their 15 goals scored on the road, a record only bettered by a few clubs. With the ‘Port defence upset by injury and suspension Meadows knew a tight reign needed to be kept on the United top scorers of Hall and Robson.
Boosting the ranks for the Sandgrounders however was their own top goalscorer,Andy Provan who completed his three match suspenion.
