In the days leading up to this game Southport manager Alex Parker issued a stark warning to his players that nothing less than 2 points would be good enough when they visit Newport County if they wanted to stay in the promotion race. County had collected only 2 points from 22 matches and had yet to record a victory.
Having beaten Newport 6-1 on the opening day of the season few would have bet against Southport from recording their second double of the season despite never having won at Newport in the past. Their previous two visits had both been disappointing draws and Parker was determined that they would break their duck…
