On This day in 1882 a letter to the Southport Visiter discussed the public opinion of the fledgling new club.
Sir,
I have read the letters of ‘Forward’ and ‘Rugby Player’ and I am glad that the former as representing the Associonsits, has such bright prospects before him, as during last season it must have been annoying in the extreme to find their field entirely vacated when our team commenced action, even if it were a second team engagement.
Public opinion may alter, the Association enclosure may be well patronised but I have grave doubts as to it providing any great opposition in this district to the Rugby game.
The Association club here is as yet so very young (half a season) that it is premature for anyone to predict what standing it will take in the dribbling work but it certainly was making very rapid strides in the right direction at the close of last season. The exodus of spectators when the Rovers and Witton faced each other at the late Athletic Sports, does not point to any increased popularity in the Association game, as if the public will not patronise two such able exponents of the above, the local club can hardly expect a very large attendance on their new field during the coming season.
