On This day – 28th September

On this day in 1886 it was unanimously resolved that in future Southport Wanderers should be called "Southport Football Club".

On this day in 1886, at a General Meeting held in the Mather’s Saleroom, it was unanimously resolved that in future Southport Wanderers should be called “Southport Football Club”.

In the below extract of a letter to the editor of the Southport Guardian by T Morris the late captain of the old, now defunct, but original Southport association club written on 1st October 1886 shows that it was a decision not unanimously popular.

It is well known to my friends, though to some people it may be news, that I am of a very modest and retiring disposition! and that this rushing into print is quite distasteful to me. But really, the announcement that appeared in your Wednesday issue re: the changing of the name and title of the “Wanderers Football Club” to that of Southport raised my ire so considerably that I felt I must conquer my natural diffidence and protest against such as unusual action. And I feel it to be my duty to inform the friends and supporters of the red, the old “Southport Club” also also all who are interested in the game of football that I along with many others consider that the Wanderers have taken a great liberty.

Future Projects

This series of on this day articles will shortly be coming to an end.
If you have enjoyed looking at the information don’t worry, it is all still available. All of the information related to players who were born, who have passed away, transfers and matches that were included in the articles are available on the website on the “On This Day” page which is updated automatically every day.

Our immediate focus is on ensuring the reunion and hall of fame in November is a success, whilst our ongoing research work will be focussed on other projects which we hope may lead to further books.
