On this day in 1989, Southport faced Stalybridge in the FA Cup 1st Qualifying round at Haig Avenue.

On the back of a spell of poor form under new manager Brian Kettle they went into this tie with Stalybridge without skipper Rob Sturgeon who was unavailable through work. In an attempt to put some punch into an attack which had been woefully short on striking power, Kettle included Andy Welsh, a recent signing from Horwich, and Mick Russell signed from Liverpool County Combination front runners Electric Supply. It’s ironic therefore that the fire power actually came from midfield with all three goals being scored by midfielders/defenders.

Facing somewhat of an injury crisis in recent weeks Lawrence Iro and Steve Jackson returned to the side, with Max Thompson making the bench. All three had missed the previous Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat at Mossley, managed by former Southport boss Bryan Griffiths. In that same game Glyn Stephens had to be replaced at half-time by Dave Massett who then retained his place for the cup clash.
