Southport are held at home after drawing 1-1 with 6th place Chorley.
The game started slowly with an early save by Chris Renshaw being the sole highlight in the early stages.
Port responded with a few chances of their own later in the half, with a well worked move by Lavelle forcing a good save by firmer Southport ‘keeper Steven Drench.
The home side should have taken the lead just before the half hour after some good work by Thibaut, Gnahoua had a second to shoot from a tight angle, but eventually saw his effort cleared off the line.
After going in at the break level Chorley managed to take the lead, Craig Hewitt striking from range, a looping effort that caught Renshaw off guard and made it 1-0.
In the 53rd minute Southport equalised, wonderful play by Gnahoua down the wing ended up with the forward striking from a tight angle, beating Drench.
From there, the Sangrounders pushed on and looked like scoring with every attack. Lavelle striking the bar and Hilton forcing another good save from the opposition keeper.
Chances came for the home side in the final 15 minutes but the game ended level.
The point was enough to see Southport move off the foot of the table after Peterborough were beaten 2-1 at home by Buxton the winner coming in the 96th minute.
