International Sandgrounders

When Ne-Jai Tucker pulled on the Bermuda shirt to face Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier in September, he became only the fourth player ever to represent his country in a senior international fixture while registered with Southport.

Full Senior Internationals (while at Southport)

George Latham (#265) – Wales (1909–10)
Southport’s first full international. Latham, a wing half, added to his Welsh caps during his spell at the club in the Edwardian era.

Paddy McConnell (#568) – Ireland (1931)
An inside forward of the early 1930s, McConnell was recalled by Ireland while on Southport’s books in 1931.

Terry Harkin (#996) – Northern Ireland (1968)
Harkin’s goalscoring form at Haig Avenue earned him a place in the Northern Ireland side. He marked the occasion in style, scoring twice against Turkey in November 1968.

Ne-Jai Tucker – Bermuda (2025)
Most recently, Tucker made his debut for Bermuda in a World Cup qualifier against Jamaica in September 2025 while a Southport player.

Others of note:

Mohamud Ali (#1950) – Somalia (2019–21) Ali was already capped by Somalia before joining Southport in 2020, and added further appearances for his country after leaving. Although no internationals were played during his short stay at Haig Avenue, he remains one of the few full internationals to have been on the club’s books.

Luke Tabone – A full International with Malta, making one appearance as an injury time substitute in the Nations League against Moldova in October 2024, however he has not yet been selected to represent his country since moving back to Southport at the start of this season. Tabone had previously been with the club as a Youth player so is also on the of players to have gone on to become internationals after leaving the club.

Youth & Under-23 Internationals

Dave Pearson (#999) – Wales U23
Earned under-23 honours in the late 1960s while at Haig Avenue.

Reg Blore (#927) – Wales U23
Also represented Wales U23 during his Southport career.

Amateur & Olympic Internationals

Jack “Nipper” Roberts (#585) – England Amateur
Scored the winning goal against Scotland on his amateur international debut in March 1933, wearing his Southport socks for the match.

George Bromilow (#850) – England Amateur & Great Britain Olympic Team
Capped more than a dozen times by England Amateurs in the 1950s, including a hat-trick against Ireland. Represented Great Britain at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne.

Idwal Davies (#437)An Abergele-born forward, Davies appeared for Southport while working locally after the First World War. He earned six Welsh Amateur caps and scored a hat trick against England in early 1923, a performance that led to a full international call two months later. An amateur throughout his career, he later moved into management with Hartley’s Jam Company and eventually settled in South Africa, where he died in 1980.
