On this day in 1933 Southport welcomes Mansfield Town to Haig Avenue.
The question on the lips of many was “What has happened to Southport?”. Why was there such a meteoric fall after such a good start to the season? In the early weeks of the season the club had genuine hopes of promotion and every side they came up against were faced with a side playing way above their third division station.
A number of changes made in a cup game against Nelson appeared to have unsettled the side. Taylor, who had previously marshalled the side well, found himself out of favour as did the experienced Little who found himself with the reserves. For Bert Pelham the loss of form was to spell the end of the road. He made clear his intention to sever his connections although at this stage he had been yet to confirm when.
A switch of players with Chester, Jolley joining the Sandgrounders and Duckworth going the other way, it was hoped would spark Southport into life.
It certainly seems to do the trick….
