On This Day in 1993 Southport booked their third semi-final appearance of the season with a 1-0 extra time victory over Marine in the third round of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy (Lancashire Junior Cup) at Haig Avenue.
Whilst the crowd came expecting a goal-fest with both sides having already scored a remarkable 206 goals between them and 11 weeks of the season still left, the game was actually a much more cagey affair. Marine goalkeeper Kevin O’Brien had turned in a man of the match performance, making several outstanding saves, before Peter Withers scored Southport’s winning goal two minutes into extra time.
