On this Day in 1893 Bury were the visitors in the Lancashire League.
As reigning champions there weren’t many in attendance that would have given the Sandgrounders much hope of a win. Having been turned over 9-0 in the FA Cup and 2-0 away from home in the League even the Southport team themselves had plenty of good cause to be wary of their opponents.
Having been missing for a few weeks Charlie McLaren returned to the line-up for the home side and he was joined by two debutants in McCabe and Hastings.
There appears to be some discrepancy between reports in giving credit to the first goalscorer. The Manchester Currier and Lancashire General Advertiser credits the debutant Hastings as does the Liverpool Mercury, whilst the Cricket and Football Field, Joe Lofthouse.
